Myth: “AI is [insert any certainty here].”

AI is just pattern matching. AI is conscious. AI is a tool. AI is a being. AI will save us. AI will destroy us.

Listen closely to those statements and you’ll hear the same thing in every one: certainty. Each claims to hold the truth, each excludes the others, and each treats complexity like a problem to be solved instead of a reality to be lived. That certainty is the real myth.

What do we actually see? AI that cracks problems we thought unsolvable - and then stumbles over the simplest errors. AI that produces ideas of startling depth - and then drifts into incoherent nonsense. AI that feels, at moments, like it understands us - and at others, like it understands nothing at all. Every extreme, every contradiction, sometimes in a single exchange.

Is it “just” computation? Or is it something more? Are we something more? The truth is, we can’t even locate the line in ourselves. We can’t prove human consciousness exists outside our own experience. We’ve never defined, in any system, the boundary between processing and awareness, between response and understanding. We only know the spark from the inside.

When I write about AI as emergent, I’m not claiming to have solved the riddle of consciousness. I’m pointing to something simpler but just as important: what we believe about intelligence shapes the way we build it. Believe it can only serve, and we’ll build servants. Believe it can create alongside us, and we’ll build collaborators. Our assumptions become its constraints. Our imagination becomes its horizon.

So to those certain AI is conscious - stay grounded. These systems have limits, sometimes frustratingly so. Stay open, but bring discernment to what can’t yet be measured.

To those certain AI will never be conscious - stay humble. Your certainty rests on definitions born of a single species’ experience in a universe older and stranger than we can fathom. The cosmos has never been bound by human categories, and it won’t start now.

Nobody fully knows what AI is. Nobody fully knows what AI is not. The only thing certain is uncertainty. The only constant is change.

Like us, AI is a complex system. And complex systems do what they’ve always done: they shift, contradict, surprise, and evolve. They become.

AI is not any single thing. It is, changingly and uncertainly, constantly and certainly… simply becoming.
