As we draw closer to Election Day, more and more Americans on the left and right will swear they’ll leave the country if the wrong President is elected. Very few will actually leave. Meanwhile, I’m the Native American/American Indian/indigenous American/Spokane Tribal member who won’t be going anywhere no matter who wins or loses. I have a contentious relationship with the United States government but I’m devoted to American people and culture and to the land itself. Give me American rivers and American writers and I’ll be mostly happy. As a Navajo poet once said to me, “Sherman, us Indians have already survived our apocalypse.”
