As a Muslim born and raised in the West outside of her community - i.e., pretty much always was the only Muslim around - and who’s now living in a Muslim country, I feel like I’m trading Christmas for Eid.
Childhood memories were filled with hallmark Christmas movies and eating bretzels at the local Christmas market while sipping hot chocolate. Matter of fact, I’ve missed it last year.
Eid was just another day of school. Later, just another day of work.
The whole country of Oman is on holidays from today until Tuesday to celebrate Eid.
I’ve been asked if my Eid shopping was done.
If my Eid outfit was ready.
Truly, I have no idea what these things mean.
But perhaps, my son will.
