I became aware of Sam through Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, and distinctly remember thinking that Sam would "carry on the torch" for Hitchens. In hindsight, that was a bit of a heavy burden, and I'm not sure anyone could really do that in retrospect. Regardless, a well-deserved award.
