Ts'msyen and Coast Salish peoples had long known something Western science only formally recognized in 2021: the fruit and nut groves at abandoned village sites in British Columbia weren’t accidents of fire or flood. They were forest gardens—deliberately cultivated ecosystems that persisted for over 150 years after the communities that planted them were forcibly displaced.
What interests me is what it took for Western science to see them. For decades, researchers looked at these landscapes and saw nature doing its thing. They couldn’t identify the genre of knowledge on display—ecological management encoded not in text or institutions, but directly in spatial arrangements and species relationships. Species selection, spacing, interdependence: social heuristics passed down through practice, not documentation.
The garden is the medium.
And when you can’t read the medium, the transmission looks like noise.
What makes this case remarkable isn’t just the misrecognition—it’s the durability. These gardens outlived the communities that made them. The knowledge was so well encoded in material arrangement that the landscape kept transmitting it on its own. In the Pacific Northwest, conifer forests typically reclaim disturbed land within a few decades. These gardens held. The heuristics resisted ecological succession for over a century.
That’s what durable social heuristic transmission looks like when the medium is right. And it keeps raising the same question for me: what happens when the medium can’t hold the signal without its community?
