Tuning has always been an obsession. I hear any small discrepancy, and that’s why the major third of a chord on guitar troubles me—it’s never perfectly in tune.
I bought this tuning fork 51 years ago, pinging it on my knee—a hard surface puts them out of tune—and then biting on it. The vibrations go through the bone, and you can tune in surprisingly loud situations. I also used a test tone through modified headphones where I removed one earpiece. Yes, that’s me pictured below when I was 18 🎸🤣
And now we use strobe-tuners. Is this progress? I don’t know, as your ear becomes lazy, but it’s certainly easier.
