Old Shanghai was pretty remarkable. Here is the stunning art deco entrance to the former French Club on Maoming Nan Lu, which looks pretty much exactly the same as it did 100 years ago - I had a wander around on a recent visit. Interestingly, the spacious grounds of what is now the Okura Garden Hotel used to be the German Club, until it was taken from them after WWI as part of war reparations.
