People who have never visited China often have the wrong idea about the country. It’s controlled, there’s no free expression. People just do what they’re told. Yes all these are true, to a point. But at a recent concert in Hangzhou to see ‘90s Britpop stalwarts Suede, where - much to my teenage self’s joy - they performed hits Animal Nitrate and So Young - the crowd were up, rocking and, remarkably considering how old the band are, singing along to the words. Yes, it may not be free, but they can still have fun.
