This sentiment is so funny to me. The difference between saying something is or isn’t political is identical in its approach to taking an abstract idea and assigning meaning to it.
However, one is interested in engaging with the reality of how our place in society affects and is affected by the people around us, and the other wants to pretend things can exist in a vacuum and that you can opt-in to the social aspects of society.
What even is a chair, y’know?
I love the Ai Weiwei quote “Everything is Art, Everything is Politics” not because it helps better define “everything” in some empirical way, but because it helps us get past taxonomy and actually start dealing with issues. Running is political, this reaction to that statement is political, it’s all political because you can’t opt out of politics if you’re a living human being alive today. That’s where we all start. So what are you going to do about it?
