Cairo Smith is correct. A solution to the issue of the state of contemporary publishing is to revive the author. I’ve been thinking about this comment for weeks. We just have to be okay knowing that that means analyzing some truly awful people (writers) alongside their work. I’m okay with this, but for this to work, we must give up moral Puritanism. We have to be comfortable saying that a monster can make a masterpiece or that a monster can make something that makes the world a better place. Which means more complex systems of ethics that moves beyond an morality-with-wallet perspective have to emerge
