One of my favorite scenes in any book was a crappy little novel by Lee Child called Deep Storm (Crichton potential, that guy) I read when I had childhood unlimited library access. In the scene the primary characters are deep underwater and they have a hairline fracture in their fuselage. To one of the characters it’s mesmerizing because the leak, while small, is a perfect straight line. He does what anyone my age at the time would have done which is reach out and touch it. And it severs his fingers.

I remember going to my mom and having to ask sneakily so she didn’t deeply inspect what I was reading (even though on paper I could read whatever I wanted, I knew that some things wouldn’t fly) if water could cut wood. She said yes and explained the mechanics of water pressure cutters and sent me along my way. The subject fascinated me for about a year. And the scene remains with me.
