The first time I was ever reviewed by the New York Times (and it’s telling that we say “I” have been reviewed rather than “my work” has been reviewed) – when I was 22, one decade ago – the reviewer, over double my age, called me/my work, an autobiographical musical, “navel-gazing.” You know why I raise this memory to you: the reference images for that term, at the time, came from critics envious of the [affirmative nouns here] evident in your repeated choice to display navel for The Gaze.
The below features my govname. It was just Fringe, but hey! It feels wild to share this on purpose; since its publication, I’ve almost hoped no one would find it. Thanks for showing us how to navel-gaze.
Anyone who doesn’t see that (true) memoir, at its core, is about mirroring and connection is willfully misunderstanding what we’re doing here 🙂↔️🙂↔️🙂↔️
