Did President Trump end “strategic ambiguity” over Taiwan? - The authors of “2024”, a new book about last year’s US Presidential campaign, obtained a recording of Trump at a fundraiser in which he told the audience he said to Xi “if you go into Taiwan I am going to bomb the sh&t out of Beijing”. CNN has posted the audio file here. If Trump is telling the truth, and not bragging for donors, the concept of “strategic ambiguity” over how the US might respond to a PRC attack on Taiwan is dead, no matter how staffers might try to walk it back. I think PRC policymakers always assumed the US would intervene, and former President Biden’s repeated statements to that effect only confirmed that belief, but a threat from a sitting US President to “bomb the sh&t out of Beijing” has to be taken very seriously, and efforts to make the US think that would be a very bad and dangerous idea would need to be accelerated.
