🚨🇦🇺 An Arab-Australian tradesman stops at Bunnings in Sydney’s eastern suburbs for sandpaper… and suddenly finds himself surrounded by multiple police vehicles, armed officers and riot police after being reported for “suspicious behaviour”. (👇Substack link below “The stop in Rose Bay”)
Not a hypothetical. That actually happened in Rose Bay in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs in May.
It turns out a member of the community had recognised him from pro-Palestine protests, decided he was acting suspiciously and called a dedicated police line.
This is the result of the response to Bondi - “Operation Shelter” a temporary force of 250 dedicated police, 28 civilian staff, and a fleet of specially modified tactical vehicles on 24/7 response - now extended to a permanent force.
But this article asks a harder question:
What kind of political and social atmosphere now exists in Bondi if an Arab workman buying DIY supplies can trigger that level of response?
The deeper you dig into Bondi over the last two years, a pattern emerges:
racial assumptions after 2024 Bondi Junction knife attacks
aggressive scenes at a Father’s Day Gaza memorial event
controversial lobby groups embedded in council advisory structures
a Greens councillor removed after backing a Gaza ceasefire motion
a mayor promoting a model “antisemitism strategy” after attending a heavily criticised summit
bringing that same summit to Bondi this November
The Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion is currently underway.
Maybe “social cohesion” in Bondi needs examining from more than one direction.
