Coming back home after so many years, I didn't expect the creaking of the floorboard to be comforting.

All those nights when I woke up from a nightmare, Mom was always there.

"Someone's walking on the floorboard!!" I would sob.

"Don't worry, honey, I'm here."

She would hug me tight.

Talking to her was like walking on an abandoned minefield. Anything you say could be labeled wrong—twisted around so many times that you begin to question your intention.

Now I hear her voice in my head.

When will you change?

Translation: When will you finally give up and fit in?
