Different approaches to scansion can complement each other. Mine is quite different to Steele’s.
One serious shortcoming, to my mind, to his metrical analysis is that he fails to recognise two patterns I cal the “pump” and the “catch” - or to be more exact, he can’t deny these patterns occur in practice, but doesn’t recognise they contain a beat shift, and so has to resort to a peculiar explanation, demanding a peculiar delivery. And because of his uneasiness with these patterns, he appears to avoid reading them wherever possible, even to the detriment of the expressivenes of a line.
But you can decide for yourself if you agree with me, and I’m only too aware no two metrists agree on everything!
