I wish we would start using the terms simple, complicated, and complex correctly. Complex is not the opposite of simple, nor is it a synonym for complicated.

A simple rule to understand it:

• Simple system: “I understand it.”

• Complicated system: “I would understand it if I broke it down into its parts and put it back together again.”

• Complex system: “I understand its parts, but when they work together, they generate unexpected behaviors.”
