The daughter of James Wolcott Wadsworth Jr. (Skull & Bones 1898) married William Stuart Symington III, who was secretary of the Air Force when Project Sign, its first official study of UFOs, got underway. The secretary of Defense at the time was James Forrestal. After the latter’s resignation, Symington talked to him privately, which left Forrestal apparently quite disturbed. He then agreed to sojourn in Harriman’s Jupiter Island, Florida, where he was met by future secretary of Defense Robert Lovett (S&B 1918) before being taken to the Bethesda Naval Hospital by psychiatrist George N. Raines. There, Forrestal is presumed to have fallen from the sixteenth floor. In the spring of 1952, a number of ‘UFO’ incidents occurred on Chesapeake Bay’s Gibson Island, which Symington’s father had purchased to turn into an elite enclave (the Pinchot family was not unknown to its yachting scene). Richard M. Bissell Jr., the “mayor of Area 51”, who supervised the U-2 program, had a brother who was a Bonesman. Bissell also happened to be put in charge of the Bay of Pigs attempt. MK-ULTRA head Sidney Gottlieb (a socialist in his youth) talked with him about techniques that “could either produce death or disorientation of a foreign leader.” As a means to decipher Fidel Castro’s personality, his palm prints were obtained. Tex McCrary (S&B 1932), who interfaced with Meyer Lansky and Otto Skorzeny, once served as a secret diplomatic conduit to Fidel.
