I have a relative who is kept alive by technology, literally implanted in her body, and she has been since her birth. A single hour without technology would kill her. She was born, and still lives, in a huge, dirty, dense city, and she knows every street corner, every person, every little detail of her neighborhood. She is developmentally and physically disabled and a remarkable person; she really loves seasonal Starbucks drinks and uses reams of plastic in her daily life, from her medical equipment to the simple, processed meals she needs to eat in order to live; her lifestyle is basically an amalgamation of all the things Kingsnorth opposes in his book. And she’s the most faithful Christian I know and my inspiration in life. I wonder if Kingsnorth has ever had a close encounter with someone like my relative. I would love for him to meet her, and see the world through her eyes for a day or two. She lives her life so close to Jesus, in such a beautiful way. Honestly, reading his book stressed me out so much and it wasn’t until I went to visit her again that I was able to see the same pitfalls in his worldview that you’ve identified here.
