We are many years into this degenerative spiral now, and it is imperative that we do whatever we can to arrest it. Overcoming democratic backsliding is going to take more than a change in administration. It is going to require a general respect for a more pluralistic culture, one that respects diversity of thought and does not assume that each disagreement necessarily binds one’s opponent to a collection of odious beliefs that they may or may not actually hold.
