It can be hard to face all of the grief and suffering in our world, and the temptation to fall into despair under the weight of it all. It is much easier to numb out—to bury our heads and busy our minds in any one of our luminous devices, which afford us a reprieve in the bliss of ignorance—at least temporarily, until a notification reminds us of yet another cat-5 hurricane or catastrophic forest fire, toxic chemical spill or fracking-induced earthquake. We can barely cope, cycling between despair and numbing, or, we can embrace a more mindful approach.
