When I started painting the female form in college my professors told me figurative work was dead. That my work was not only horrible, but less than impactful. A career in the arts was sudden death. So shortly after graduating, I abandoned painting. I abandoned my creative practice. And I abandoned my body.

This is how the world disembodies women. Strips them of their knowing.

It took me nearly ten years to come back to my painting practice, and in turn… my own body. I spent years giving it all away, harming, disassociating, believing I was the problem in a fucked up demented world.

Painting the form brought me back to my power. I’m so thankful it’s giving some back to others, too xxx I hope it always serves as a permission to be defiant in the face of brutality, disconnection and inauthenticity.

Happy International Women’s Day to my fellow sisters!!! May you always find power in the gentle, the whimsy, the rage, the magic. The world needs you in this body to build a better one

To women 🗡️
