Was home sick and did a “feel bad” watch of back to back episodes of The Testaments and Euphoria and it really made me both appreciate and yearn for shows about women like Living Single, Girlfriends, Sex and the City, Girls! Just ladies having normative lives omg.
Both The Testaments and Euphoria present such extremes of the female experience, but they’re oddly good companion watches. Women and girls are having the worst time in both while living under very different conditions.
This season of Euphoria is extremely dark but Rue’s storyline in particular is quite strong imo and Cassie’s has the potential to be really interesting. This latest episode showed a great contrast between Cassie’s naive entrance into the world of sex work, Maddie trying to be in control as this manager/pimp and the ladies in the strip club Rue works in dealing with the very sick reality of it all.
Sugar babies, sex work and only fans have been sold to young women as means of economic control where they have all the autonomy, but I think Euphoria is showing what happens the deeper girls get into it.
The Testaments is just… that Aunt Lydia episode was harrowing, the choice she made to survive. These older women preparing these child brides to marry old dudes, it’s all very nauseating.
