Dear Mr Hannity,
You say in your interview on Fox News with Mr Miller that European nations are “pretending” to defend Greenland, “with 34 people and a couple of dogs”.
My first question to you is: defend from whom?
The United States of America? Because it seems to be the only country threatening Greenland at the moment.
Even to write this feels so absurd. Never in my wildest fantasies did I ever anticipate the USA would become an enemy of Europe.
During the Cold War, the USA was our only hope, as the leader of the Free World. For us, Finns, living next to the Soviet Union (with whom we have had a couple of wars), the USA was like a paradise.
But that paradise of freedom is gone.
Europe is alone now. We not only have to deal with the Soviet Russia emboldened by President Trump, but also with President Trump, who has become hostile to us, declaring he does not care about international law or transatlantic relations.
You say we pretend to defend Greenland.
I am sorry, but you are mistaken.
You see, Greenland is not an asset to us. It is not real estate. It is part of us.
Particularly, we, the Scandinavian countries, of which Greenland is a literal part, care about each other.
Our system of education is based on Bildung, a concept developed by the German philosopher Wilhelm von Humboldt. It means self-cultivation and character development, not only knowledge acquisition.
We are educated to become critical, independently thinking individuals who care. That is how we managed to develop our relatively poor countries into thriving welfare states.
In Scandinavia and Europe in general, it is not money and power that talk. It is culture, values and respect for our fellow humans.
Unlike what Mr Miller says in your interview, no one except the USA is threatening Greenland. If he understood international politics, he would know this, but I guess knowledge is as little valued in the Trump administration as International Law and, well, decency.
Now that Trump has renounced international agreements and adopted a mafia-style leadership, who knows what will happen, particularly in Taiwan and the Baltic countries. Dictators around the world are watching Trump with excitement.
The good news is that the weaker the USA becomes, the stronger Europe is becoming.
Trump's attempt to divide Europe has failed. We are more united than ever.
President Macron of France just said that “no amount of intimidation will change the EU nations’ course on Greenland. “
We can deal with the tariffs. They will not destroy us. But becoming bullied by a country that used to be our friend is a sad thing to witness.
Sad as this is, there is a silver lining to all this. The bully on the other side of the pond has made us Europeans value the friendship we have with each other. It is a beautiful thing.
Perhaps you could mention that on your show?
Thank you for your attention to this matter,
Kati from Finland 🇫🇮🇪🇺🇬🇱
