Edward Lloyd ran a modest London coffeehouse where sailors and merchants gathered to share shipping news.

Lloyd began posting notices about vessels, cargo, and voyages, which attracted merchants willing to underwrite sea risks for a fee.

That informal arrangement at Lloyd's Coffee House became the foundation of Lloyd's of London, still one of the world's most significant insurance institutions more than three centuries later.
