In 1973, FedEx was nearly out of cash.

The company had just $5,000 left and couldn't cover its fuel bills.

After being turned down for financing, founder Fred Smith flew to Las Vegas and played blackjack.

He turned that $5,000 into $27,000, enough to keep FedEx planes in the air for another week.

That extra time allowed Smith to raise millions in new funding.

The casino win didn't save FedEx by itself, but without it, one of the world's largest logistics companies might never have survived.
