Fifteen years after WPATH’s 2010 “de-psychopathologization” campaign, Genspectis launching the counter-campaign to restore psychiatric safeguards.
In the latest Beyond Gender, Mia Hughes and I discuss how this turning point in 2010 — when WPATH declared trans identities “natural and healthy” — dismantled every psychiatric safeguard and opened the door to mass medicalisation.
By 2013, the DSM-5 had replaced Gender Identity Disorder with Gender Dysphoria — making the identity healthy, only the distress pathological. By 2018, the WHO went further, removing it from the mental health chapter altogether. The result? Children are falling into an ideological abyss with no safeguards to catch them.
The campaign argues that it’s time to restore the freedom to name pathological behaviour as pathological — not to stigmatise, but to protect. The “de-psychopathologization” project silenced honest analysis and stripped away the caution that psychiatry once provided.
This isn’t about moral judgment; it’s about compassion, evidence, and the duty of care owed to young people in distress.
