Great interview with Savala Nolan and especially enjoyed this take on essays. I’ve heard countless writers over the years aspire to writing a collection of essays, but rarely do they define what an essay actually means to them.

It’s a slippery thing! What does the form mean to you?

Essays are a funny beast. They’ve got to focus inward, or you’re just doing journalism. They’ve also got to focus outward, or you’re just writing in your diary. Getting that balance right takes time, and it takes the desire to weave your own life into the outer world, and vice versa, on the page.
