This is a consequence of the left being dominated by the petite bourgeoisie. The pb, even when emotionally sincere individually, doesn’t really have a material interest in overturning exploitative structures, and will always stop short of that. And they will become economically dependent on the movement, as we see with academics and nonprofits — this makes them compelled to professionalize it, control it and draw boundaries of “respectability” around it to preserve it. To get out of this trap, the working class must be in the lead of emancipation movements. This probably requires separate organizing structures where workers run their own organizations and determine what sort of support they want (and don’t want) from pb orgs. The working class has been systemically crushed politically for a very long time, so building at the grassroots is needed.
