Enter Mutiny After Midnight, his second Johnny Blue Skies LP and an unofficial sequel to Passage du Desir. Whereas the predecessor record addresses the possibility of losing everything — personal and professional — only to ultimately come out the other side revitalized, Mutiny has both lower emotional stakes and a much wider set of concerns extending into the political (specifically the excesses of ICE and the pervading suckiness of Trump’s America). He opens with a mission statement, “Make America Fuk Again,” which appropriately is the track most likely to weed out anyone not on Sturgill’s very particular, “love it or hate it” frequency. Over a groove that recalls Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” as performed by The Marshall Tucker Band, he drawls, “I got that Hunter Biden energy / I’ll make a hooker fuck around and fall in love.” Is that a stupid lyric?
