Sarah keeps reducing the crisis to one of civic participation and persuasion, as though enough protests, cardboard signs, and moral appeals can revive a system whose structural incentives have already decayed. That’s why she dismisses JVL’s deterrence arguments as “not a real plan” because her framework still assumes American democracy fundamentally works if good people organize hard enough. JVL, meanwhile, keeps dragging the conversation back to the darker reality that Republicans behave this way because the power structure rewards them for it, while Democrats like Biden governed under the fantasy that universal good-faith governance would somehow restore legitimacy to institutions that large parts of the country no longer experience as legitimate at all.
