She kept watering the dead plant long after the leaves had curled into themselves.

One morning, the soil smelled different, like rain that hadn’t happened yet.

When she touched it, something soft gave way beneath her fingers.

She couldn’t believe her eyes, as something beneath the soil was fighting its way through.
