A working-class kid at IQ 140 in the American public school system has no pathway. The gifted programs that would have identified him have been eliminated. The psychometric gate that was the one race-blind component of the identification pipeline has been removed. He sits in a regular classroom, gets used as a peer tutor, gets diagnosed with ADHD when his boredom presents as inattention, and either shuts down or drops out. His parents don’t know the system failed him because the system wrapped the failure in therapeutic language about inclusion and equity.
