How does the colony decide how many ants to send out? It’s easy to think maybe some central planner does it—the colony has a queen, after all. But the queen isn’t really the leader of the colony, she’s more like the colony’s reproductive organ. She stays deep in the colony, away from where all the foraging ants are making decisions. Instead, it’s solved through a feedback loop of collective behavior.
