Deloitte warns memory chip shortage may last until 2029 or 2030

A global memory chip shortage that industry insiders have dubbed "RAMageddon" is pushing prices for consumer electronics sharply higher, as chipmakers redirect production capacity towards the insatiable demands of artificial intelligence data centres.

Samsung Electronics warned this week that the shortage will likely deepen in 2027 and remain tight through at least 2028. A new report from Deloitte projects that AI server DRAM costs roughly doubled during the first quarter of 2026 alone, with a fourfold increase expected for the full year — and no meaningful supply relief arriving until 2029 or 2030.
