The Palace of the Despots, the only surviving Byzantine palatial complex in Greece, opens its gates—after 42 years of restoration and enhancement works—to both the Greek and international public, fully restored. Unique objects narrate the role of imperial families in the administration and intellectual flourishing of Mystras in the permanent exhibition “Princely Narratives,” while the two impressive temporary exhibitions, “In the Princess’s Palace” and “Image of Glorious Attire” (featuring handmade garments of the Palaiologan court inspired by Byzantine iconography), transport visitors to the final years of Byzantium.
Mystras was a major late-Byzantine fortified city and capital of the Despotate of the Morea, especially flourishing in the 14th and 15th centuries. It's located on the slopes of Mount Taygetos in the Peloponnese, about 6 km northwest of modern Sparta in southern Greece.
