I think another thing stopping people from getting more involved is that most people don’t know what actions they can take to actually help. With climate change, people at least felt that they could reduce plastic use or water consumption and be part of the change they wanted to see, but for most people AI safety seems very abstract. More recently, political outreach and activism seems more useful than ever, and I would encourage people to put pressure on politicians to consider these issues.
