He was a Greek from what is now Turkey. He joined the Roman army. He was martyred as a Christian in Palestine. And somewhere along the line he is said to have killed a dragon. Allegedly.
Portugal, England, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Ukraine, Malta, Ethiopia, Catalonia and Aragon, and the cities of Moscow and Beirut have claimed him as their patron saint.
