I watched the documentary on Lincoln’s homosexuality, “Lover Of Men”, last night. Oy. C.A. Tripp’s “The Intimate Life of Abraham Lincoln” is the best scholarly treatment I’ve read if you want to explore further.
Just the contents of Lincoln’s letters and facts of his life overwhelmingly point to Lincoln being gay, it seems to me. And the way in which straight historians have tried to rationalize this away is silly.
So a mature, sober empirical review of the historical record by scholars uncontaminated by ideology, critical queer theory, and trans politics, and inclusive of evidence against its thesis, would be welcome. Let’s just say, sadly, that no longer seems possible in contemporary America.
