The Free Press hasn’t responded to the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil in any detail but they posted a tweet defending it. They say his crime was handing out pro-Hamas pamphlets. That is not a crime in a free society and it was not a charge he was arrested for. That doesn’t seem to matter. We do not know if ICE had a warrant. That doesn’t seem to matter either.
The rest of the tweet is a broad indictment of the Palestinian protests. Fine, but it has no legal or constitutional relevance to this illegal detention case.
So they’re avoiding the core issue and ignoring immigration law. Give them time but I’m not hopeful. They have placed a massive asterisk next to the First Amendment.
