Julia Roberts performance in Erin Brokovich is one of the best examples of an actor taking the one superpower that made them a star and pointing it somewhere nobody expected. Roberts’ charm made her a romcom queen, and instead of burying it to prove that she can do “serious” work, she channels it into a role where her charm is used to make you believe in the character (instead of falling in love with her). That’s the playbook more actors should be using to avoid typecasting: don’t suppress your gift, just find a second use case for it.
