After my grandmother died, my mother inherited her house. In a few short years, she went from “You and your sister get 25% of the value when I sell it” to “I’m going to rent it out, and you’ll get 25% of the rent” to “I’m your mother- I gave you life, and you’re just ungrateful.”
Being a landlord incentivizes antisocial behavior even in people who would otherwise be generous. It teaches them to extract value without putting in effort, and lets you “lord” their privilege over the less fortunate rather than empathize with and support their neighbors.
