Oh, open-plan offices - supposed Valhallas of collaboration, communication, the exchange of ideas. However, as we’ve been pointing out for over ten years now, they actually lead to LESS face-to-face-interaction (as people hunker down to protect their privacy); HIGHER rates of sick leave; and LOWER well-being.
And now, the latest study suggests that they also lead to an increased risk of workplace bullying.
Of course, some people do enjoy open plans (especially if they include lots of private spaces); I actually love writing in cafes, which theoretically is like an open plan office but really is not, because you can come and go as you please, and have much more anonymity.
