Data Sharding (Directory-Based):

If your sharding logic is hardcoded into your app, moving data between shards or adding a new shard requires a code change and a redeploy. This "rigid sharding" makes maintenance a nightmare. Directory-Based sharding uses a separate "lookup service" to track which data lives on which shard. This allows you to move data between servers in the background without your main application ever needing to know.
