Each year, the world waits with “bated breath” to see which 10 wines Wine Spectator has deemed “the best of the year.”
But are they really “better” than the rest?
Last week we released an “in-depth” statistical “analysis” of the Wine Spectator “Top 10 Wines of the Year” list and determined that it’s got a few “issues” (LIKE ME!)
We looked at their stated “criteria” and picked apart trends and/or “recurring themes” among the wines that placed over the past 10 years to examine whether the list is in fact an unbiased execution of those criteria, and at a higher level, whether the list is even representative of the best wines at all.
Interesting tidbit that we didn’t point out in the article is that 3 out of the top 10 wines of 2025 were Burgundian “varieties” (i.e. CHARDONNAY, PINOT NOIR) from “Sonoma.” While this is a small sample size, nearly a third of the list being this limited in scope makes one’s jorts itch with questions – questions philosophers have literally gnawed their own feet off trying to resolve.
