Olivia Rodrigo responded to the critics about her babydoll dress pointing out how our culture normalizes pedophilia.
I agree with her and understand that she wanted to bring references like Courtney Love and Bikini Kill to her stage. Great. If her audience gets it, wonderful! I admire that she voices over on reproductive rights and other themes, and I love that she’s drawing attention to the riot grrrl movement.
She did it despite not having a public image that challenges the male gaze — differently from Courtney Love and Kathleen Hanna, to mention the examples she brought in an interview.
And it makes me understand the gap: a pair of heavy combat boots wasn’t enough to bridge her to the riot attitude. That’s why she fell on the lolita bench instead of the riot’s.
Although the reference is valid, we can’t say she’s bringing girl elements to a place where girls are not allowed, or rebelling against anything. I can’t decide if it was a good or a bad idea, but I like that she brought the riot grrl movement to the agenda.
We need certainly need more riot.
