The European Union is preparing to launch a new app to help protect children online, and it may soon change how age verification checks work across the internet.
This week, the European Commission (EC) announced plans for a European age verification app. The goal is to help people prove their age online without revealing more personal data than necessary!
The app will allow users to confirm that they are over a certain age when accessing websites or platforms with age restrictions. Instead of uploading identity documents or sharing personal details, the app is designed to confirm age while keeping other information private.
The EC says the app will support online platforms that must comply with the Digital Services Act. Many services are now required to take stronger steps to protect minors.
A pilot version of the app is expected to launch soon across several EU countries. Officials say it will work alongside the future European Digital Identity Wallet that is currently being developed.
