People are claiming this is a validation of AI writing. But maybe it’s also a commentary on the state of literary prizes and how they are judged.

Just imagine a prompt that asked: “Hey, bot, write me a story that could win the Commonwealth Prize.” And, presto….

Of course, the judges might have been bots too. That would be rather fitting. Then we would just need bots to read all the slop, and the circle would be complete.
