Mary Eliza Mahoney changed who was allowed to be in 1879. She became the first Black licensed professional nurse in the United States, at a time when most nursing schools excluded Black students. Her success challenged racist barriers in professional education and helped legitimize Black nurses in a segregated healthcare system. She also co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses — advocating for equity in nursing education and practice.
