Exactly 27 years ago, on March 20, 1998, Wild Things slithered into theaters and quietly became one of the most deliciously twisted erotic thrillers of the late ’90s.

Directed by John McNaughton (the same mind behind the raw intensity of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer), the film opens in the humid, glossy suburbs of Blue Bay, Florida. High school guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) seems like the golden boy — until wealthy teen cheerleader Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) accuses him of rape. Then troubled outcast Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell) comes forward with the exact same claim.

What follows is a masterclass in deception. A high-profile trial, a sleazy lawyer (Bill Murray in one of his most quotable roles), a dogged detective (Kevin Bacon), and a web of revenge, extortion, and shifting alliances that keeps pulling the rug out from under you.

The genius of Wild Things as a thriller lies in its relentless layers of betrayal. Just when you think you’ve figured out the con, another twist emerges — and then another. The swampy, sun-drenched atmosphere mirrors the characters perfectly: beautiful on the surface, predatory and rotten underneath. Alligators lurk literally and figuratively.

It’s trashy, sweaty, unapologetically lurid, and smarter than it has any right to be. A cult classic that rewards rewatches because the final revelations rewire everything you thought you knew.

If you love neo-noir that plays dirty with your expectations, seductive danger, and plots that twist like a Florida mangrove, Wild Things remains wild, wicked, and essential viewing.

Happy 27th anniversary to one of the most entertainingly devious thrillers ever made. 🐊💰🔥
